GUY'S KARATE SCHOOL
GUY'S KARATE SCHOOL
10 Reasons Families Choose Guy's Karate School
1. You're Learning From a Genuine Martial Arts Master
At the heart of Guy's Karate School is our founder and Chief Instructor, Shihan Lindsay Guy.
Lindsay has dedicated more than four decades to martial arts and holds a 7th Dan Black Belt in Shotokan Karate, as well as black belts in Taekwondo and Okinawan weapons.
He is also a Level 5 ISKA Referee and has represented, coached and competed at national and international levels.
His experience isn't something that has simply been collected on paper.
It has been built through decades of training, teaching, competing, coaching, judging and mentoring martial artists.
In 2025, Lindsay was inducted into the City of Maitland Hall of Fame for his contribution to sport and the community. Maitland City Council recognises his more than 40 years in martial arts, his international achievements and his contribution to generations of young people.
When you train at Guy's Karate School, you're learning from someone who has spent a lifetime mastering and teaching martial arts.
2. We're Not a Gym That Just Happens to Teach Martial Arts
There is an important difference between a fitness business that offers martial arts classes and a dedicated martial arts school built around a martial arts philosophy.
Guy's Karate School was established in 2012 and has grown into an established martial arts community serving families throughout Maitland, Rutherford and the surrounding Hunter Valley.
Our focus isn't simply on making students tired for an hour.
We teach:
- Technique
- Discipline
- Respect
- Confidence
- Focus
- Coordination
- Self-defence
- Perseverance
- Leadership
- Personal responsibility
The physical training is only part of what happens on the mat.
The real goal is what students take with them when they walk out the door.
3. A Structured Pathway From Toddlers to Adults
One of the biggest differences at Guy's Karate School is that we don't put every student into the same generic class.
Children develop differently at different ages.
That's why our programs are designed around specific developmental stages.
Tiny Tigers
18 months – 3 years
An introduction to movement, coordination, listening and confidence through age-appropriate martial arts activities.
Little Ninja
3 – 4 years
Helping preschoolers develop focus, coordination, confidence, listening skills and independence.
Little Samurai
5 – 7 years
Building discipline, confidence, balance, coordination and foundational karate skills.
Karate Kids
8 – 12 years
A structured progression developing technique, confidence, discipline, fitness and self-defence skills.
Senior Karate
13+
More advanced technical training for teenagers and adults, whether the goal is fitness, traditional karate, self-defence or competition.
Sport Karate
For students who want to take their training further, our dedicated tournament program provides preparation for kata, kumite and competitive performance.
There is a pathway for the whole family.
4. We Cater for Both the Beginner and the Competitor
Not everyone joins karate because they want to win trophies.
And that's okay.
Some students want:
Confidence.
Some want:
Fitness.
Some want:
Self-defence.
Some want:
Discipline and focus.
Some simply want to make friends and try something different.
And some want to become champions.
At Guy's Karate School, you don't have to decide on day one.
Students can start simply wanting to learn karate and, as their confidence and ability develops, choose whether they want to pursue tournaments and competitive karate.
Our students have competed at local, state, national and international events, including major competitions in Australia and overseas.
Your goals can change as you grow. Our school can grow with you.
5. Real Martial Arts Experience at the Highest Levels
There is a difference between learning about competition and actually experiencing it.
Guy's Karate School has a strong competitive history, with students representing the school at major tournaments throughout Australia and internationally.
Our training can include:
- Kata
- Kumite
- Tournament strategy
- Speed and reaction training
- Technical refinement
- Competition preparation
- Strength and conditioning
- Mental preparation
But competition is never compulsory.
We believe tournaments should be an opportunity for students who want to challenge themselves — not something every student must do.
Karate should meet the goals of the student, not force every student into the same mould.
6. We Teach More Than Karate — We Develop Character
A belt is important.
But it isn't the most important thing your child will earn at karate.
We want our students to develop qualities that matter long after they leave the dojo.
Confidence
Learning to believe in themselves and their ability to overcome challenges.
Discipline
Learning that progress comes from consistency, effort and commitment.
Respect
Learning to respect instructors, training partners, parents, teachers and themselves.
Resilience
Learning that failure isn't the end — it's part of getting better.
Focus
Learning to listen, concentrate and stay committed to a task.
Leadership
Older students have opportunities to develop leadership skills and become positive role models for younger students.
**The black belt is the reward.
The person they become along the way is the real achievement.**
7. A School With a Proven Reputation
When you're choosing a martial arts school, awards shouldn't be the only reason you choose one.
But they can provide useful evidence that an organisation is doing something right.
Guy's Karate School has received recognition at both business and martial arts levels, including:
Australian Small Business Champion Awards — Best Martial Arts School
Hunter Business Awards — Best Fitness Service
Along with multiple finalist positions in business and martial arts awards.
Shihan Lindsay Guy has also received recognition through several martial arts Hall of Fame inductions, including the ISKA Hall of Fame, Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame and World Karate Hall of Fame.
These aren't the reason we train.
They're recognition of the work that happens behind the scenes.
8. A Family-Focused Martial Arts Community
Guy's Karate School isn't built around a revolving door of casual gym memberships.
We want students to feel like they belong.
Families know our instructors.
Students know their training partners.
Older students help younger students.
Instructors know the students they teach.
And parents become part of a community rather than simply dropping their child off at a class.
We want you to feel like you've joined something — not simply purchased something.
9. A Convenient Rutherford Location for Maitland Families
Our dojo is located at:
7/321 New England Highway, Rutherford
The location makes us convenient for families travelling from Rutherford, Maitland, Telarah, Aberglasslyn, Gillieston Heights, Lochinvar, Huntlee, Kurri Kurri and surrounding areas.
We're positioned directly on the New England Highway, making getting to and from training simple for busy families.
And with dedicated parking available, parents don't have to deal with the hassle of searching for a park before class.
**Good martial arts training is important.
But so is making it practical for your family to attend consistently.**
10. We Believe in Long-Term Development — Not Quick Fixes
Anyone can make a child tired for an hour.
That's not what we are trying to achieve.
We want to see what happens after:
3 months.
1 year.
3 years.
5 years.
We want to see the shy child become confident.
The distracted child learn to focus.
The child who gives up easily learn perseverance.
The teenager develop leadership.
The adult become fitter, stronger and more confident.
And eventually, we want to see students who started as children become instructors, leaders and role models themselves.
That's what long-term martial arts development looks like.
So, Why Guy's Karate School?
Because you're not simply choosing a place to learn karate.
You're choosing:
Experience
More than 40 years of martial arts experience behind the school's founder.
Expertise
High-level martial arts qualifications, competition experience, coaching and judging experience.
Structure
Age-appropriate programs with clear progression.
Community
A family-focused environment where students can belong.
Opportunity
Traditional karate, self-defence, fitness, leadership and competitive pathways.
Results
Students who develop skills and confidence that extend well beyond the dojo.
Recognition
A school and instructor recognised at business, martial arts and community levels.
Stability
An established Maitland-area martial arts school with more than a decade of history.
Don't Just Compare Martial Arts Schools. Compare What They Can Give Your Family.
When you're looking for karate or martial arts classes in Maitland or Rutherford, it's easy to compare schools by:
Price.
Location.
Class times.
Number of Google reviews.
But there are more important questions to ask.
Who will actually be teaching my child?
What experience do they have?
Is there a structured pathway for my child's age?
What happens when my child progresses?
Is there an opportunity to develop leadership?
Can they compete if they want to?
What sort of values does the school teach?
Will my child be known as an individual?
Will this be somewhere our family can stay for years?
Those are the questions that matter.
Your Child Deserves More Than Just a Martial Arts Class
At Guy's Karate School, we believe martial arts should create positive change.
Not just stronger bodies.
Stronger minds.
