Traditional Japanese Karate | Technique, Discipline & Character

Traditional Shotokan Karate is at the heart of what we teach at Guy’s Karate School.

Shotokan is more than learning how to punch, kick or block. It is a traditional martial art built around technical skill, discipline, control, respect, perseverance and personal development.

Our training maintains the traditional foundations of Shotokan while providing students with a structured and progressive approach to karate training.

Who Is Traditional Shotokan For?

Traditional Shotokan Karate is suitable for teenagers and adults who want to study karate as a traditional martial art.

It is ideal for students who are interested in:

  • Traditional Japanese karate
  • Developing strong technical foundations
  • Kata and traditional karate forms
  • Kumite and partner training
  • Discipline and personal development
  • Improving physical fitness
  • Developing focus and concentration
  • Progressing through the traditional grading system
  • Deepening their understanding of karate

It is suitable for complete beginners as well as experienced martial artists.

What Will They Learn?

Students develop the fundamental elements of Traditional Shotokan Karate.

Training includes:

  • Kihon – Fundamental karate techniques
  • Kata – Traditional karate forms
  • Kumite – Partner and sparring training
  • Stances and movement
  • Punches and strikes
  • Kicks
  • Blocks and defensive techniques
  • Combinations
  • Timing and distance
  • Body control
  • Breathing and coordination
  • Traditional karate etiquette
  • Discipline and respect

As students progress, they develop a deeper understanding of not only how techniques are performed, but why they are performed that way.

What Happens in a Traditional Shotokan Class?

Traditional Shotokan classes follow a structured approach to training.

Classes typically begin with preparation and warm-up exercises before progressing into kihon, where students practise fundamental techniques and movement.

Students may then work on kata, developing precision, balance, timing, movement and understanding.

Partner training and kumite may also form part of the class, allowing students to explore the application of their techniques, distance, timing and control.

The emphasis is on correct technique, discipline and continual improvement.

Students are expected to train with respect for their instructors and fellow karateka.

Do They Need Any Experience?

No previous experience is required.

You don't need to be particularly fit, flexible or athletic to begin.

Students start with the fundamentals and progressively develop their skills through structured training.

Experienced martial artists are also welcome and can continue refining their existing knowledge and technique.

What Happens After They Join?

Once you begin Traditional Shotokan Karate at Guy’s Karate School, you follow a structured pathway of development.

Students can work through the kyu grading system, progressing through the coloured belts before eventually working towards black belt and beyond.

As your technical knowledge develops, so does your understanding of kata, kumite, applications, movement and the principles behind traditional karate.

For many students, reaching black belt is not the end of their journey—it is the beginning of a deeper level of training.

Students can also choose to explore other opportunities within Guy’s Karate School, including Sport Karate, competition training and Self Defence.
